Kindness + Cold Nights

Late night.
Somewhere between yesterday and this morning.
A homeless man (in a swanky suit) has no money,
Boards the bus regardless.
The temperature outside
is not pleasant.
Winter is comfortably
Settling over the city.
The bus driver refuses to leave. All of us are waiting.
Yearning to get home.
Does that man even have access to one of those?
Brief arguments. Scoffs.

This is not a man who has the means to take a bus.
It is not a man who has shelter from the cold.
Yet he still needs to get somewhere.
It is not a man asking for more champagne
As 125 ml does not look enough in the glass.

So I stood up.

Swiped my card on the reader.
‘Happy?’ I snarlingly spat at the driver.
(Not my finest moment, but for fuck’s sake, let the man on.
Help out a poor soul in the middle of a cold night)

The wanted to give a few coins
He dug out of his pocket.
I refused.
The poor sod needed it more than I.

Be kind.
Even more so when it is cold outside.
